Coronation Street Bernie star’s famous wife had to step in after storyline ‘got too much’

Coronation Street’s Bernie Winter star Jane Hazlegrove has opened up on her famous wife’s sweet gesture after a storyline became “too much.”

Coronation Street’s Jane Hazlegrove has opened up about the invaluable support she receives from her famous wife, especially when the demands of the soap became overwhelming.

The actress, who became a household name as Bernie Winter since her 2019 debut on the ITV show, has won over fans as the mother of Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell), Paul (Peter Ash), and Kit (Jacob Roberts).

Bernie’s journey on the cobbles has been anything but calm, with storylines ranging from Paul’s MND struggle to jail time. This week, viewers were moved as Paul passed away from MND, with his last moments shared with Bernie, Gemma, and stepdaughter Summer (Harriet Bibby).

Off-screen, Jane’s heart is taken by her loving wife Isobel Middleton, a fellow actress known for roles in Emmerdale and EastEnders. The couple, who married in 2015, have shared over 28 years together.

Jane recently revealed a touching moment from Isobel during a particularly tough time when she felt “unable to open the script” for the episode featuring Paul’s death.

In a conversation with Liverpool Echo and other media, Jane admitted how challenging it can be to film such emotional content, confessing: “I’m an absolute wreck! I’m quite an emotional person anyway.”

Soap star Jane then opened up about the emotional toll of her acting work, recounting a touching moment of support from her wife.

She shared: “It is really hard. I couldn’t actually open this script at home, because I didn’t want to have that hanging around my dining room, if you know what I mean.”, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Going on to share a glimpse into her personal life, Jane continued: “So my missus took me off to a shepard’s hut in Northumbria, and we sat in the sunshine with a bottle of wine and read it together.”

She confided about the script for Paul’s death episode: “I thought it was going to be too much for me to have in the house, as it were.”

Jane’s wife Isobel, herself an actress, has had multiple roles on Emmerdale playing Dr Lane in 2014, a barrister in 2018, and Jean Rawson in 2020. Isobel has not just graced Emmerdale but also appeared on EastEnders as Sadie Banks in 2002 and ventured into film with “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” in 2009.

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
