ITV Emmerdale confirms unexpected return at Christmas and ‘heartbreaking family drama’ in 2025

The festive seans are due to be filmed soon for the ITV soap

Emmerdale bosses have teased an unexpected return at Christmas as the scenes prepare to be filmed. The festive season is often dramatic in Soapland and while it’s not known if the arrival is a positive one, it is sure to be a surprise.

Iain MacLeod, who became the Executive Producer of the ITV soap alongside Coronation Street earlier this year, has revealed that preparations for this year’s big Christmas Day special are already underway with filming set to begin very soon thanks to the advanced filming schedule.

Iain revealed to The Sun: “This Christmas, there is a huge surprise arrival on Christmas Day. As well as some life or death jeopardy on Christmas Day but obviously there will be festive brilliance as we do every year but I think it is one of the most exciting Christmases that I can remember on Emmerdale this year!”

He then went on to hint at even more carnage that would hit the Dales into the New Year. He added: “Christmas in soap is a difficult one as you want it to be dramatic and exciting but you also want it to have that humorous, warmth and festive soapy flavour and I think the balance is bang on here.

“But into 2025, what we have planned so far is the usual degree of spectacle and drama and heightened kind of filming stuff. We also have incredibly heartbreaking family drama with plenty of Dingle action. There is also some classic gothic antics at Home Farm – some skullduggery! It is going to be a really exciting 2025 with lots more to come.”

Iain spoke out about the future plans after Emmerdale picked up the night’s top prize for Serial Drama. The Leeds-based soap took home the gong after beating soap rivals Corrie, EastEnders and Hollyoaks.

Paralympians Kadeena Cox and Dame Sarah Storey announced the news at the ceremony at London’s O2 Arena on Wednesday night (September 11). Collecting the award, Matty Barton star Ash Palmisciano said: “We just want to thank our audience – without you this show would not exist. We are so grateful to you, and we know that some of you have watched us since the very beginning.

“No matter what’s going on in your life, we’ve been there. And we promise you that we will continue to make fantastic television, we will continue to tell the stories that resonate with you, and we will continue to tell the stories that matter.”
