Coronation Street fans were left thrilled this week as a beloved character made a surprise return to the cobbles after being ‘missing’ for several months.
A Coronation Street favourite thrilled fans with a comeback to Weatherfield after an unexplained absence left viewers puzzled.
Gail Platt, played by Helen Worth, first graced our screens in 1974, and is considered one of the soap’s most enduring and iconic figures. However, Gail has been notably absent from recent episodes, sparking speculation amongst the audience.
Concern peaked in June when it was announced that Helen Worth would be departing the show, with scenes reportedly being shot for her grand exit originally set to feature the return of Gail’s ex, Martin Platt (portrayed by Sean Wilson).
Yet, fans were treated to a stunning turn of events in the episode aired on Wednesday (September 5) as Gail showed up unexpectedly, joining the rest of the Platts for Max Turner’s (actor Paddy Bever) 18th birthday celebrations at The Bistro.
Social media was abuzz with reactions from overjoyed viewers. On Twitter, one fan exclaimed: “Gail! ! ! There she is!”, highlighting the joy of seeing the popular character again.

Another added their voice to the jubilation saying: “GAIL!!!! That’s her first appearance since March the 25th,” reports the Liverpool Echo, underlining how much Gail had been missed by pointing out the significant gap since her last screen appearance.
Other comments included sentiments like: “A sighting of the lesser spotted Gail. Happy days,” and “GAIL APPEARANCE FINALLY.” Someone else shared shared the thought: “Loved seeing Gail in last night’s episode treasuring every appearance now.” Another admirer resonated with this feeling: “Treasure any Audrey and Gail scenes from now til Xmas.”
Gail’s much-awaited comeback to the screen will surely evoke mixed emotions among viewers, given that actress Helen is poised for her departure from Coronation Street later this year.

The initially heart-wrenching announcement in June of Helen’s exit sent shockwaves through the soap’s fanbase. As she looked back on her choice to part ways with the soap, Helen revealed at the time: “This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world.
She further remarked: “I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding.
“I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in and week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew. The past 50 years have flown by and I don’t think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet.”
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
