EastEnders star Navin Chowdhry teases “visceral” Nish Panesar scenes

“He cannot tolerate any kind of betrayal.”

EastEnders star Navin Chowdhry has teased that there are some “visceral” scenes coming up for his character Nish Panesar.

Nish has been causing all sorts of trouble for the Panesar family in recent months, making a horrifying deal with Priya before turning her family against her by pretending that they had slept together.

But he recently discovered that Vinny and Suki had been working together behind his back, with Vinny plotting to reclaim the Panesar empire.

Since then, Nish has attempted to cause trouble for Suki by bringing Ayesha back into their lives – though this only resulted in Suki and Eve getting engaged.

Navin spoke to Digital Spy about Nish’s future plans while taking part in the official EastEnders nominees photoshoot for the 2024 Inside Soap Awards.

We filmed an exclusive video going behind-the-scenes as the cast posed for photos, which can be seen in the current issue of Inside Soap. You can see the full video at the top of this page.

On how Nish moves forward after discovering Vinny and Suki’s secret, Navin told Digital Spy: “This is a man who cannot tolerate any kind of betrayal or deceit or disloyalty that comes his way.

“Despite what he does to others, it’s totally unacceptable for him to be on the receiving end of anything like that, so you can only imagine what his reaction is going to be! All I can say is, it’s probably the most visceral that we’ve seen him.”

Nish returned to the Square in May with the shocking news that he is dying, a huge twist that Navin has enjoyed playing on screen.

“When I first heard that was where the story was going, I was really excited,” he said. “I thought it was just another way to convey his villainy. He has different tactics that he needs to employ now to try and achieve what he wants.

“He has spent most of his time since he’s been back causing hell for everyone else, and suddenly he’s been dealt the harshest card. So for him to cope with that and then react in the way that he needs to try and still be on top and still win is just a really interesting dynamic that I don’t think anyone saw coming.”

Navin’s portrayal of Nish has seen him nominated for Best Villain at the Inside Soap Awards, alongside fellow bad guy Dean Wicks – played by Matt Di Angelo.

Reflecting on this nomination, Navin said: “I feel very flattered, very honoured actually. It represents the work of not just me but everybody on the show, so when we get that recognition, it’s an indication that the work is being done and is being received well. I feel really good about it.”
