EastEnders aired a blast from the past on Christmas Eve, as Nigel Bates, played by actor Paul Bradley, returned to the BBC soap for the first time in almost 30 years
There was a major return on EastEnders on Christmas Eve, as Nigel Bates made his comeback after 26 years away.
Some viewers believe they already know what has sparked his return to the show, amid a new mystery surrounding the character. it’s teased he has a secret that has led him back to Walford as he reunites with his old friend Phil Mitchell.
Paul Bradley has reprised his role after almost 30 years, and scenes on Tuesday night saw him attend the local soup kitchen. Yolande Trueman was there handing out food and drinks to the homeless and those in need.
As Yolande went to serve someone it turned out to be Nigel, and she asked him what had triggered his journey to Walford. He told her: “Memories,” while Nigel looked very different from his past stint in Walford – with him last seen in 1998.
New images show the character sharing a heart-to-heart with Phil, but where is his partner Julie Haye? Where is Nigel’s daughter Clare, and why has he returned to Walford alone?
Viewers are speculating his return could be what “saves” Phil amid his own upsetting storyline. Phil is currently at the centre of a loneliness plot, isolating himself from loved ones and struggling to cope.

Fans have wondered whether Nigel will help his former pal. A theory read: “NIGEL BATES COMING BACK AND SAVING PHIL FROM HIS DEPRESSION.” Viewers will have to tune in to see what has brought Nigel back, with EastEnders teasing the initial scenes are “just the beginning” for the character.
Speaking of his return, actor Paul Bradley said: “I’m thrilled and honoured to be back as Nigel. Despite it being such a long time ago, I still get recognised as Nigel in the street. Returning has been great as I’m so familiar with many of the faces at EastEnders, and they are a very friendly bunch.
“It’s fantastic to work with Steve McFadden again – I’m a huge admirer of his work, and he sets the bar really high. I’m having a really good time.” EastEnders’ Executive Producer Chris Clenshaw revealed: “It’s fantastic to welcome Paul Bradley back as Nigel Bates, a character much-loved by long-time EastEnders viewers.
“There’s a lot of mystery about Nigel’s situation and why he’s here alone, which will be revealed in the coming weeks. Phil has never needed support more than he does this Christmas, so we’re excited to reunite these two old friends.”
EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
