Emmerdale viewers are already coming up with theories for newcomer John Sugden’s real intentions

Emmerdale viewers believe they’ve figured out the true intentions of newcomer John Sugden on the popular ITV soap. The character, played by 42-year-old actor Oliver Farnworth, made his first appearance on Wednesday night (August 7) as Aaron Dingle’s new romantic interest.

The pair had arranged a date but unexpectedly met when John’s car broke down. After Aaron fixed the vehicle, the two shared a passionate moment that quickly turned into a roadside tryst. However, John abruptly left, taking Aaron’s possessions and Eric Pollard’s car keys with him.

The next day, Victoria Sugden inadvertently upset the grieving son at his mother’s funeral, only to be shocked to discover his name was John Sugden. In a surprise twist, Eric later awkwardly revealed that John could potentially be her half-brother and the son of her late father, Jack Sugden.

Since then, Victoria has been eager to connect with her newly discovered sibling, while Aaron is furious to see John in the village, particularly after finding out he is related to his ex-husband Robert Sugden.

In Friday’s episode, Aaron confronted John about his motives, leading John to warn him to back off and demand that his car be repaired immediately by Aaron and Mackenzie Boyd, reports the Mirror.

John has found himself alienating Victoria and his newfound niece, Sarah Sugden, who was shocked to learn of her secret uncle. Showing no regard for bonding with relatives, John seems eager to exit the village.

Emmerdale enthusiasts have taken to X, formerly known as Twitter, to speculate on John’s hidden motives after keeping his distance. Theories range from John having a covert alliance with Caleb Milligan to eyeing up Victoria’s family inheritance.

One viewer tweeted: “Could be in with Caleb x”, while others shared their thoughts such as: “#Emmerdale will Victoria change her tune with John if he starts with the whole ‘where’s my inheritance half sister.”

Other comments included: “John definitely has an agenda #Emmerdale” and “I think John Sugden could be the next murderer… #Emmerdale.”

During a recent appearance on Lorraine, Emmerdale’s fresh face Oliver teased viewers with an ‘absolute rollercoaster’ journey for his character John.

Speaking about his role, he commented: “His opening gambit is pretty strong from last night’s episode and then as we can see from the clip today we find out a lot about him quite early on.”

Oliver hinted at the mysterious facets of his character: “But there’s a really enigmatic side to him as well.”

He added: “I’ve been filming for two months now and there’s a lot of stuff I can’t talk about but really that is the tip of the iceberg because it’s an absolute rollercoaster”, before excitingly revealing: “There’s a lot to come, there’s a lot to come!”

Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
