The Jenny Connor actress was flooded with messages over her latest update
Coronation Street star Sally Ann Matthews has been told she ‘hasn’t changed’ as she marked a huge cobbles milestone. The actress took to social media to reveal it was the anniversary of her debut in the ITV soap.
Oldham-born Sally, who likes to be known as Sal, was cast in 1986 as Jenny Bradley – the daughter of villain Alan Bradley who was taken in by mother figure Rita Tanner – then Rita Fairclough – while her father worked away. After five years, Sally quit the show in pursuit of other roles.
She returned briefly in 1993, before making a huge comeback in 2015 when Jenny started dating Kevin Webster. However, dealing with the loss of losing her four-year-old son Tom two years earlier when he drowned in a paddling pool, she snatched Kevin’s son Jack in order to keep him safe and nearly threw herself off a balcony, resulting in her getting sectioned.
She then didn’t return to the street again in 2016 when Rita took pity on her but she’s gone on to become a Weatherfield mainstay, now, the landlady of the Rovers Return and known by her married name, Jenny Connor.
Taking to Instagram on Monday evening (December 16), Sal shared a throwback photo from her first appearance in Weatherfield as she makred nearly four decades since her first on-screen appearance in the role of Jenny.
Alongside the photo, she wrote: “39 years ago today, I first stepped onto the cobbles. Whodda thunk it?” Her Corrie co-star Joe Duttine, who plays Tim Metcalfe, was quick to respond, writing: “Hahahaha,” alongside a laughing emoji and a red love heart in the comment section,” to which Sal replied: “Cheeky.”
EastEnders legend Adam Woodyatt also responded with a string of crying laughing emojis while former Corrie and Emmerdale star Hayley Tamaddon commented: “You haven’t changed a bit.”
Her fans and followers were also keen to respond. @suecarty61 echoed: “You’ve not changed a bit.” @amstereofan said: “You are a brilliant actress with still amazing hair.” @davecunningham187 replied: “@sallyannmatthews congratulations sal remember it well Jenny is a good un.”
@ljreck wrote: “A baby!!! So beautiful to this very day!!! What a milestone!!!! Cheers and congratulations, Lovey!!!!” @vickyfrench__ commented: “And you’d better stick around for 39 more (at LEAST).” @thisueryder added: “& you were absolutely brilliant back then too! Great chemistry Alan, Rita & Jenny. Shame he was hit by a tram. Great early story lines, very top drawer. Old Corrie storylines were fantastic!!”
