‘Real reason’ I’m A Celebrity’s Dean McCullough signed up for show Radio 1 co-star defends actions

Dean McCullough’s Radio 1 co-star Danni Diston has opened up on her pal’s time in the I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here jungle and shared her thoughts on why he entered the camp

Dean McCullough has divided opinions since joining the I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here camp, but one radio co-star has jumped to his defence.

The early morning presenter for Radio 1 has faced countless trials in his stay so far Down Under, screaming the phrase ‘ I’m a celebrity, get me out of here’ on two occasions. And as tension started to rise in camp, he also clashed with Coronation Street star Alan Halsall, who tried to wake him to do his chores.

However, his radio co-star Danni Diston has defended him and joked: “I did think in my head he’s probably having a bit of a lie in out there,” before saying he’ll be enjoying getting more rest in camp.

Dean is usually on air from 5am to entertain the early risers. And Danni continued to tell the Sun, he’s usually very cheerful. “I have never really experienced a grumpy Dean so I’m lucky in that sense. I don’t think he’s a very grumpy man. He does early breakfast and you have to be quite up and on it to do earlies.”

She added that his small fallout with Alan could have been due to tiredness or the fact camp are starting to go hungry. The altercation came as Dean continued to sleep while Jane Moore was left to complete their firewood collecting task.

Camp leader Alan tried to wake Dean and tell him he had to help as Jane isn’t able to go alone. However, there was little response from Dean as Alan called out his name and tried to explain the situation. After seemingly failing to make him stir, Alan jibed: “Do you not fancy it? No?” With no apparent response from Dean, Corrie star headed down with Jane to help her.

Moments later, Dean decided to join the pair and said to Alan once he caught them up: “You can go back now.” Expressing surprise, Alan responded to Dean: “Oh you made it! I was trying to wake you up as soft as I can.”

Dean hit back: “If you’re gonna wake me up, you need to give me a minute. Listen to me. If you’re gonna wake me up, you need to give me a minute, alright? It takes me a couple of minutes for my contact lenses to get back working again, alright? So you don’t need to say to me ‘do you not fancy it?’ Okay? And then don’t turn around and walk away.”

And it’s not the only time Dean has faced a frosty moment. On Monday night, the camp lightened up as they celebrated Love Island star Maura Higgins’ birthday. However, one camp member wasn’t best pleased with Dean’s antics after giving him a stern warning. N-Dubz singer Tulisa tried to sleep in, but Dean had other plans. Dean said: “Now that she’s out of the Leaders’ Lodge, Tulisa has warned me that there must be no musical theatre early in the morning, so I made it my mission to make sure the camp woke up this morning with the sound of lovely singing!”
