Coronation Street is set to air a huge twist involving Audrey Roberts which will leave daughter Gail Platt devastated
Coronation Street is gearing up for a shocking twist involving Audrey Roberts, and it doesn’t bode well for her daughter Gail.
Soap icon Sue Nicholls, who has portrayed Audrey since 1979, has been at the centre of numerous major storylines over the years.
This is particularly ‘true’ now, as the soap prepares for the departure of Audrey’s on-screen daughter Gail Platt, played by Helen Worth. The 73 year old actress announced her decision to leave the long-standing drama in June this year, describing it as the “perfect time”.
Helen first graced the screen as Gail Platt in 1974, quickly becoming a fan favourite. She wrapped up filming earlier this month, with her exit scheduled to air during the upcoming holiday season.
However, it seems the Platts won’t be having a peaceful Christmas. Speaking to Plymouth Live and other media outlets, new boss Kate Brooks revealed that Christmas on the cobbles will be “very fun” and “really lively”, but cautioned that “lots of bombshells are dropped”, reports Plymouth Live.
Kate also hinted at a potential wedding between Gail Platt and Jesse Chadwick (John Thomson), but playfully refused to confirm whether it would go ahead: “Whether she goes through with that or not, I cannot tell anything.”
Elaborating further, Kate said: “You’ve got the Platts at the heart of it, you’ve got David and Shona, and David has made massive mistakes. This goes on to have massive consequences and Shona hits that self-destruct behaviour.”
“And [she] makes some really terrible judgement calls but what is important for me about David and Shona is that they can both really mess up but that love that they have is so strong.”
However, it’s not just David who’s keeping secrets from his dear mum. Gail’s own mother Audrey will also “betray” her in the upcoming episodes. All those secrets come to the forefront on Christmas Day, so you basically have Gail – who’s going to leave the street – in the run-up to Christmas she has found out that some of her nearest and dearest have absolutely betrayed her,” Kate disclosed.
Kate went on to reveal how Audrey also plays a role in Gail’s betrayal. She stated: “She [Gail] doesn’t know who to believe, even her dear old mum has kind of lied to her and she really struggles with that. And she’s a bit like ‘I don’t know whether I want this, I don’t know whether I want to be with Jesse'” Kate further added.
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
