Actress Sair Kahn recently returned to filming on the ITV soap as Alya Nazir and her first scenes back are imminent
Coronation Street star Sair Khan has spoken about her character’s ‘unexpected’ return to the cobbles amid a blossoming romance. The actress recently returned to filming on the ITV soap as Alya Nazir.
Sair took a break from the cobbles after she announced that she was expecting her first child last December. She kept much of her pregnancy out of the spotlight and as her temporary Corrie exit scenes aired on-screen, the new mum confirmed her son’s arrival in May.
She said at the time: “He’s here! …Our little boy is just marvellous. Very serious and curious about the world. He’s super strong and so resilient for joining me on the absolute rollercoaster that was our 22 hours of labour.”
It was then in September that Sair revealed that she was back at work with a post on her Instagram Story. Sharing a shot of her scripts, she wrote: “I’m Backstreet.”
And now her comeback scenes have been revealed. According to new spoilers for next week’s Corrie, Yasmeen’s thrilled to have her back and is proud that she’s now shadowing a criminal solicitor.
She’s soon in the mix of the action as Matty Radcliffe is hauled in for questioning after Carla Connor is attacked. But in a new legal role, Alya Nazir provides a statement corroborating his alibi. When a smug Matty makes a dig about Becky’s death, Lisa’s furious, convinced he must have had something to do with it.
Soon after, Matty and brother Logan clock Lisa watching them from her car. At the station, Alya shows Lisa and DC Kit Green a picture she’s received from her client, claiming he’s a victim of police harassment. Lisa makes out she bumped into them but Kit suspects she’s lying.
Meanwhile, as Alya returns to the solicitor’s office, Adam Barlow admits that he’s missed her and suggests dinner. Speaking about what brings Alya back, Sair said: “Alya makes a very unexpected return. Where we find her is not where you expect her to be, and where you expect her to show up. So that throws a spanner in the works at the very beginning.
“Dee-Dee [Bailey] is one of her best friends, so she will know what has been going on, but where Alya finds herself is in a very compromised situation of her own when she gets back.”
And she’s not neccesirly the same person who left the cobbles six months ago. “Alya has definitely had a complete revamp, and I think getting away from the street, really focusing on her career and where she wants to be, has ignited a new spark in her,” Sair revealed.
“She’s changed lanes a little bit in terms of her work and what she wants to do, but she’s putting her heart and soul and all of her passion into making her career a success and learning. And when she comes back onto the Street, you can tell that she’s been influenced by the place that she’s been working. It’s quite corporate, her look has changed. She’s obviously got a bit more money, her style is much more elevated, and she’s taken time out for herself, rather than pouring everything into her family relationships, which have taken a lot from her. I think she’s taken the opportunity to be a bit selfish, and I quite like that for her.”
But what about Adam? Sair commented: “I think Alya has seen a different side to Adam that she didn’t see when he was her boss, a much more caring and sensitive side, although she knows he can be a bit cocky and arrogant, I think she likes being kept on her toes, and it’s exciting for her. He’s got big aspirations, and I think she finds that a turn on. So, I think very keen on him.”
