Coronation Street star admits he won’t speak to on-screen mum now she’s left ITV soap

Jack P. Shepherd, the actor who plays David Platt in Coronation Street, has revealed that he doesn’t “ring anyone” who has parted ways with the ITV soap

A Coronation Street actor with a “history” of not speaking to former co-stars has revealed that this will also be the case for his on-screen mum.

In a recent episode of the On The Sofa podcast, a listener asked if the hosts will remain in touch with Helen Worth, the actress who played Gail Platt in Coronation Street, but has since left the show after 50 years.

Jack P. Shepherd, who plays David Platt, Gail’s son, in the legendary soap, admitted to co-hosts and fellow Corrie stars Colson Smith and Ben Price, Jack said his lack of contact applies to “all walks of life”, but explained the one time he would make an exception, much to their amusement

Jack said: “No, I usually don’t; I don’t. If the opportunity arises, and they phone me, I’ll answer”, to which his co-host, in fits of laughter, replied: “If they ring him”.

However, Jack added: “That’s just all walks of life. I don’t ring anyone really. Who do you ring?” The 36-year-old was then asked if he’d spoken to Helen since her exit, with the actor replying that he hadn’t.

Meanwhile, his colleagues revealed that they had indeed contacted Helen since her exit. In October, Gail Platt suffered a shocking heart attack on the show, which led to a near-fatal cardiac arrest and the character being saved via a stent.

Corrie fans already knew that Helen would be leaving the iconic soap as she announced her plans back in June, saying: “This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world. I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers, who were very kind and understanding.”

Born Cathryn Helen Wigglesworth and originally from Morecambe, Lancashire, Helen started her career in the soap just three years after the tragic death of her mother in a hit-and-run when she was only 20.

She took on the role back in 1974 but also appeared in other shows, including Doctor Who’s ‘Colony in Space’ and ‘The Doctors’. Helen has landed recognition for her services to drama in the form of an MBE from the Prince of Wales.
