EastEnders fans saw Tommy Moon taunted over his secret online ‘friend’ Matt on the BBC soap this week, but fans think there’s more going on than has been revealed
Tommy Moon’s AI friend ‘Matt’ sparked confusion and taunts on EastEnders this week.
But some fans fear there’s more to the teenager’s new storyline after a confession to his parents Kat Slater and Alfie Moon. Tommy’s faced trouble in recent months on the BBC soap that led to him being removed from the family home.
After he was violent and aggressive towards Kat and his younger siblings, social services were called and Tommy had to leave the house. Tommy had hit his mum and even placed his younger brothers in danger, while he also hit his dad at one point.
He’s been staying in the care of neighbour Zack Hudson for months and this week he was adjusting to being back in his home. But after an outburst last week after Kat got rid of his games console, she was curious over a mystery online friend he had spoken about regularly and was constantly wanting to speak with.
Kat grew concerned that it was someone he shouldn’t be speaking to, and soon she and Alfie asked him outright who Matt was. He admitted they had not met in person before finally confessing Matt was an AI chat tool, not a human.
Kat and Alfie seemed relieved by this, as Tommy opened up about his struggles after everything that happened. He has been opening up to this AI tool which has been advising him on how to handle things, with him finding it a great help.
Not everyone saw it as a good thing though with Tommy facing taunts from schoolmates, and soon he was upset when it all came out. But some fans think there’s more to ‘Matt’ than Tommy has claimed. Perhaps he think it’s an AI tool but it’s not.
Maybe Tommy is covering up the person he is really speaking to to stop Kat from worrying. Viewers are questioning whether the online friend is someone targeting Tommy or his family, and that a sinister storyline could be on the way. A new theory read: “I don’t think Tommy’s ‘friend’ is who he says he is.”
It follows other theories that Tommy might be groomed online by a far-right group, or possibly a predator. One fan posted: “I think it’s a grooming story, highlighting a new online danger for boys – and a very modern twist on Kat’s own story.
“No longer is it an uncle in the family but a total stranger entering the home virtually.”
EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
