Coronation Street fans have been flooding social media with comments as they were left distracted by Tommy Orpington’s return to Weatherfield.
Those who follow the ITV soap will know Tommy from various mentions and some appearances over the years but it was in December 2023 that Matt Milburn reprised the role.
The actor first appeared on the cobbles as the Weatherfield County footballer, who befriended Steve McDonald and Tim Metcalfe after hiring Michelle Connor as a wedding planner, in 2016.
He then made further sporadic appearances over the next few years and was last seen in 2021, when he retired from his footballing career.
It was in December 2023 that Tommy returned to the cobbles in his new job as a painter and decorator and he quickly caught the eye of Tracy Barlow. Despite being in a relationship with Steve McDonald, Tracy embarked upon an affair withe the former footballer before they were eventually caught.
They eventually became a couple and last year, they moved to Spain as Tommy took on a year-long job as a coach. Tracy returned to the Street earlier than Tommy because of her dad Ken’s ill health and the involvement of Cassie Plummer at No.1 Coronation Street.
It was then during Wednesday night’s (March 12) Corrie that Tommy returned to the Cobbles and Tracy looked surprised to see him. He told her he’d been offered another coaching job, this time in Southampton.
When he tried to say it’s not that far when compared to Spain, Tracy wasn’t impressed. After a back and forth, Tracy suggested to Tommy that he find another job outside football, but he said he couldn’t because it was his life.

“I thought I was your life,” Tracy hit back. But it transpired that Tommy had already taken the job and hadn’t renewed the lease on the apartment in Spain, thinking Tracy would agree to the move. But instead, the new couple went their seperate ways.
And there was a mixed response to Tommy’s return to the soap, with many distracted by his appearance and others demanding he be made a permanent cast member.
