Sarah Sugden star Katie Hill has teased a huge change ahead for the character on Emmerdale as she takes part in a new and dramatic storyline
Emmerdale star Katie Hill has warned of some dramatic scenes ahead for Sarah Sugden.
Katie has played Sarah for a number of years on the ITV soap and whilst she is a Sugden, Sarah also has some strong connections with the Dingles. Teasing that she is set to lean more into her Dingle side, Katie warned of trouble ahead.
In a new chat, Katie explained there will be “consequences” ahead for Sarah as she focuses on her Dingle upbringing and leans into danger, often being “reckless” about her life and her health. Fans of the show will know Sarah is at risk of dying early, given that she was diagnosed with fanconi anemia a number of years back.
Speaking to The Mirror and other press about her link to the Dingles, she said: “She’s got Charity as her grandma and Cain as her grandad. She’s definitely always had it around her. I think now she’s thinking ‘I’m a big girl and it is my turn to be a proper Dingle now’.
“She’s going down that route as it is what she’s seen her whole family do her whole life. I’m really enjoying exploring the Dingle side. I’m also enjoying doing some of the stuff which shows more of her vulnerable side. She’s such a fun character to play. She has her Dingle side, which is fun to mess around with, but I think she has got a good heart deep down. So, it is nice to dip into both sides.”

Katie – who plays Sarah – heaped praise on her co-star Emma Atkins, who plays her grandmother Charity.
“My relationship with Emma is amazing. She’s a funny, lovely person and we share a dressing room together so in-between scenes we’re always catching up. Emma is more like a best friend to me and she’s nowhere near as old as my grandma,” she said.
“If I was having a bit of a bad day she’s the first one to recognise it and ask if I’m okay. We have a really nice relationship with each other. We’re all a close bunch really.”
However, Katie has warned there could be trouble ahead for Sarah – as she leans into her “reckless” side.
“I think throughout my time of playing Sarah she’s had moments where she goes a bit reckless and she sort of thinks ‘I don’t know how my life is going to pan out’ so I’m going to live life however I want,” she said.
“She sometimes forgets that it might come with a few consequences but it plays a part in way she sometimes is reckless sometimes. I’m enjoying some of the stuff showing her more vulnerable side but she’s such a fun character to play.”
