Emmerdale Ruby’s dad Anthony star’s life – including role on Netflix’s The Crown

Nicholas Day has joined the cast of Emmerdale in the role of Ruby Fox-Milligan’s father Anthony, alongside actress Georgia Jay, who will be playing Ruby’s daughter Steph

Two new faces are due to arrive in Emmerdale shortly, as Ruby Fox-Milligan is reunited with her estranged family following the death of her mum.

Ruby’s father Anthony, played by Nicholas Day, will be making his way to the village alongside her daughter Steph, portrayed by actress Georgia Jay. The two newcomers will no doubt stir up some trouble for Ruby (Beth Cordingly) who has not seen her father or daughter for decades.

Many viewers will recognise actor Nicholas, 77, from his roles in shows such as Minder and The Crown. He’s also the narrator of Netflix show Myths & Monsters.

Nicholas played Detective Sergeant Michael Morley in Minder in the 90’s but more recently he played Jim Prior in the latest series of The Crown. He also played Deputy Assistant Commissioner Donald Bevan in Series One of the BBC drama New Tricks.

Nicholas portrayed Jack The Ripper in series six of Goodnight Sweetheart in 1999, and played another police officer, DCS John Meredith in a single episode of Foyle’s War in 2008. He also appeared in Margaret and The Take, and as Martin Crisp in The Dogleg Murders. His film roles include appearances in Penelope Pulls It Off, The Golden Bowl, Russian Dolls and Amazing Grace.

Before deciding to become an actor, Nicholas worked as a supply teacher at Plumstead Manor School for Girls’ for a brief time during the early 1980s, where he taught drama.

The actor tends to keep his personal life out of the spotlight and it is not currently known if he is in a relationship or not.

Nicholas’ character in Emmerdale has been described as a man who has mellowed in his old age and seems like delightful company to the outside world, but Ruby hasn’t seen her father in over 30 years.

Reflecting on his new Emmerdale role, Nicholas said: “I’ve been made so welcome in the Emmerdale family. And my screen family is great to work with, the scenes just fly. No kidding – I feel blessed.”

His co-star Georgia added: “I am thrilled to be joining the cast of Emmerdale. The cast and crew have all been so welcoming and I’m very excited to see what lies ahead for Steph, given her intriguing backstory.”

Emmerdale producer, Sophie Roper, commented: “We’re delighted to be welcoming Nicholas and Georgia to Emmerdale as part of the Miligan family. With so much yet to discover about Ruby, the arrival of her father and daughter will unlock her past and see Ruby and Caleb tested in ways we’ve never seen before. With two actors of such great calibre, they’re certainly set to make their mark on the Dales.” Anthony and Georgia will appear on screen later this month.”

Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1 at 7.30pm and available to stream from 7am on ITVX
