James Bye’s next move after leaving BBC show EastEnders behind has now been announced and he’s going from soap to stage following Martin Fowler’s dramatic death
Actor James Bye’s next career move after leaving Albert Square and Martin Fowler behind has been revealed.
Martin – who has been played by James, 40, since 2014 – died in the live episode of the BBC show as part of EastEnders’ 40th anniversary week. He had become trapped under a metal beam following an explosion at the Queen Vic after Reiss Colwell crashed his car into the pub.
He swerved to avoid Ian Beale who had been pushed into the road by wife Cindy Beale. While Martin helped many get out, he found himself stuck under a long metal beam as Stacey watched on in horror. James has found another job quickly following his emotional exit.
He has landed an iconic role as Jane Austen hero Mr Darcy and will appear in the theatre in the lead role of Death Comes To Pemberley. The show will be directed by Joe Harmston and Endeavour star Sean Rigby will join the cast as Colonel Fitzwilliam.
James said: “I am leaving EastEnders on an absolute high after the explosive live 40th anniversary episode. After a decade of gritty storylines it’s going to be quite a switch to put on period clothes as one of literature’s romantic leading men, but I can’t wait for this new chapter to begin.”
Speaking about his exit, James said last week: “Saying goodbye is not easy, but after 10 years at EastEnders and on the night of the shows epic 40th anniversary – the time felt right. It’s an honour to leave on a story of this magnitude. A huge thank you to all the fans of the show, EastEnders wouldn’t be what it is without you, and to the BBC and EastEnders team for trusting me with this role for so many years.
“This fruit and veg man will always hold a special place in my heart. It’s time to look forward, and I’m incredibly excited for what the future holds. RIP Martin Fowler.” Martin, born in August 1995 in the first year the soap was broadcast, at first appeared to survive as the beam was lifted, but moments later went into cardiac arrest and paramedics were unable to save him.
Meanwhile, Bex Fowler is confirmed to be returning to EastEnders very soon following the death of her father. Actress Jasmine Armfield is reprising the role after five years away for “devastating” scenes, amid another huge return being on the way. After her exit to go traveling in 2020, Bex heads back home to be with her mother Sonia Fowler and other grief-stricken family members.
Soap boss Chris Clenshaw added: “We’re delighted to welcome Jasmine home to EastEnders as part of Martin’s farewell. There’s no way that Bex would miss her dad’s funeral, and Sonia needs her eldest daughter more than ever. It’s been five years in which Bex has gone out into the world, so she’ll come back with renewed wisdom and experience.”
