EastEnders star reveals why she won’t return as iconic role amid Natalie Cassidy exit

The British actress, 64, is best known for her role as Carol Jackson, which she played intermittently between 1993 and 2015

EastEnders icon Lindsey Coulson has revealed why she’s not set to make a return to the beloved BBC soap as it approaches its 40-year milestone.

The actress, 64, is widely recognised for her portrayal of Carol Jackson, which she played intermittently between 1993 and 2015.

Despite her character being mentioned in Albert Square narratives since her departure, Lindsey hasn’t made an appearance. Currently, with Sonia Fowler, Carol’s youngest daughter played by Natalie Cassidy, entangled in intense storylines on the show, fans are querying why Carol is absent.

During her chat on ITV’s popular This Morning with hosts Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard, Coulson was pressed about how her current role on Waterloo Road stacks up against her time on EastEnders, hinting that she doesn’t see a comeback anytime soon.

Cat queried: “Are you enjoying filming the drama compared to the soap? Is it very different?” To which Lindsey delved into the technical aspects: “It’s shot on single camera so it is continuous and I haven’t done continuous drama for a while so at first I thought ‘oh gosh I don’t know if I’ve got the muscle memory and how can I learn the lines’.”, reports Plymouth Live.

She further explained: “Also it’s sort of like how a head teacher speaks, it’s easier if you’re doing the emotional stuff because you can listen and react. I mean it’s not as much as EastEnders because they’re doing four a week but ours is two over a period of five weeks.”

Ben turned the spotlight to EastEnders with its much-anticipated anniversary episode on the horizon, set to be broadcast live on the BBC. He shared, “We have three guys (from EastEnders) on tomorrow ahead of next week and we were talking about how much Diane is going to have to retain for the live episode because there is two versions and she won’t be told until 20 minutes before the live show.”

Reflecting on her own live episode experience, Lindsey confessed: “I did it ten years ago, the last live show and I had about four lines and it was stressful. I don’t find it fun. When I first started Waterloo Road I knew what I was doing but my nerves (on Eastenders) would overtake me. My lips would stick onto my top lips.”

While discussing Natalie’s upcoming departure from the beloved soap opera, Lindsey added her personal sentiment: “I’ve known her since she was ten years old and she was always asking the questions and she was a grown up then. I love Natalie, she will be missed.”

It’s confirmed that Natalie is on her way out of Walford, as she’s decided to leave the series. The actress has been a fixture in viewers’ lives since her character Sonia Fowler joined the Jackson family in Albert Square back in 1993.

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV and ITVX and EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and iPlayer
